Welcoming the year of Monkey with early Chinese New Year lunch at Shang Palace, Shangri-la Hotel Jakarta. How does it relate, celebrating Chinese New Year, it's a special occasion for Chinese, the certain time when the whole family come together, sit and savor good foods. Saying it's too early but I'd like to share with you these particular dishes to celebrate Chinese New Year. Started my lunch with something fresh, thirst quencher, Lychee Tea. It was exactly my fifth iced Lychee Tea for the whole week. Unlike the usual, as frequently stick to water or unsweetened tea.
Shall we start with Deep Fried Prawn? Coated with mayonaise, and accompanied fried prawn ball with foie gras. Prawn mayo was nice, juicy yet not mushy, but mayo was too sweet for my liking. One bite of prawn with a piece of strawberry was outrageously delectable, yes the mouthwatering one.
For the choice of poultry, Crispy Chicken with Mango in Spicy Sauce. Salty savoury chicken combined with tangy and spicy shredded unripe mango, not overly sour but very fresh.
First impression, sushi! Actually, it's Wok Fried Glutinous Rice with Winter Meat. Rice rolls filled with fish cake and veggies. Personally I prefer stir-fried scallop, asparagus, and shimeji mushroom in the middle, taste better than the appearance.
The ultimate pork dish, everyone's favorite Barbeque Suckling Pig and Jelly Fish. Crispy skin, extremely tender meat, sweet and aromatic hoisin sauce, all you need is a bowl of warm steamed white rice.
Next, it's Deep Fried King Prawn with Laci Sauce accompanied with Golden Bun, sauce was sweet and not spicy for my liking, prawn was good, and the golden bun was best I could find on the plate, crispy on the outside, soft and chewy mantao-like texture inside.
Exceptionally scrumptious Baked Lobster with Egg White in Barbeque Sauce, when it came to our table, I thought it was risotto. In fact, a delicate savory egg white, almost like puree, with perfectly cooked lobster and melted cheese on top. Certainly my personal selection among all the dishes during the lunch.
Special offering for Chinese set menus will be available from 7th February until 22 February 2016, Shang Palace also offers delicacies for takeaway if you prefer to celebrate Chinese New Year at home. Have a prosperous New Year!!
